The event at Malibu’s romantic Beau Rivage restaurant is billed as “Evening of Enchantment – An Extraordinary Evening of Magic and Wine Tasting.” On this very rare occasion, the advertisement does not nearly capture the incredible magical experience that awaits you.
With the Pacific Ocean serving as the backdrop to the intimate, candle lit upstairs room, the fun began with a delicious assortment of hors d’oeuvres complimented by wine pairings from the prize-winning winery Rosenthal – The Malibu Estate. A representative from the winemaker visited each of the five tables chatting and answering questions, and invited everyone to return for more wine at the end of the show.
Following the wine tasting, the 28 guests were led down the narrow stairway to an extremely cozy wine cellar where the “magic” part of the evening was about to unfold. And, unfold it did with a dazzling, mind-blowing array of what the award-winning magician David Minkin referred to as “special magic pieces which, I have spent four years developing and only perform here at Beau Rivage.”
The up-close-and-personal illusions included coin and card tricks which despite being viewed by 56 eyes, defied understanding of how they were done, leaving the small gathering gasping in awe and disbelief at what was being performed before their very scrutinizing eyes.
The $95-a-ticket “Evening of Enchantment” has two seatings on Sunday evenings with the first one beginning at 6 p.m. Perhaps the timeframe could be addressed, as the guests were a bit rushed through the wine tasting as well as the very brief intermission, and oh, yes, do keep those hors d’oeuvres trays filled.
