Earlier this month, Franklin Elementary School was named a California Distinguished School. Franklin is one of only 343 schools in the entire state to receive this honor.

“It is such an honor for Franklin Elementary to be recognized by the State Superintendent for what we already knew to be true: Franklin is truly an amazing place, made so by the actions and care shown by teachers, staff, parents, and the community for the benefit of our students,” said Principal Tara Brown.

Marquez Charter Elementary in Pacific Palisades was also named a Distinguished School.

Teresa Kounin Terry of Santa Monica has been named the Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters 2008 Big Sister of the Year. Terry’s Little Sister is Elika, and they have spent much time together since 2005. “If God could put an angel on this earth without wings, it would be my Big Sister, Teresa,” says Elika.

For the second year in a row, Santa Monica College has finished in 3rd place in the nation among 179 community colleges competing in the 2007-08 national Student Math League competition.

SMC’s top individual performer was Ke Qu, who finished 5th nationally among 2,658 competitors.

Altogether, 125 students from SMC participated in the math league.

“I am very proud of our students,” said math professor William Konya. “We’ve matched our best finish ever for the second year in a row, and our students have proven they are top-notch.”
