SMC Eyes Improved Football Record:

Since SMC won its conference in the 2003 football season the Corsairs have struggled. The team was winless until late last season when it won a couple of games to finish 2-8.

However, veteran head coach Robert Taylor believes some special players and improved camaraderie could lead the Corsairs back to prominence in 2008.

Middle linebacker Charlie Hatchett is an all-conference player who is rated among the top five at his position in the state.

Wide receiver Edwin Reed is highly regarded too and running backs Bruce Hill and Cedric Hayes are sophomores who played prominently last season.

Taylor is happy with the installation of artificial turf at Corsair Field and in early workouts the squad showed a togetherness that wasn’t present a year ago as the losses mounted.

After starting with a couple of road games SMC will have a 1 p.m. home opener September 27 against L.A. Valley.

The Western State Conference no longer exists in football due to an alignment and SMC will play in the Western Division of the American Conference.
