New Samohi Coach Names Three Assistants:

Three assistants have been named to aid new Santa Monica High head football coach Travis Clark.

Byron Jackson, who will coach the wide receivers, played in the National Football League with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Petey Maiden, who played at Utah State with Clark, was a linebacker for the Washington Redskins and will teach that position at Samohi.

Mark Wicks. who will share defensive coordinator duties with Clark, was a 10-year Arena League player with the Los Angeles Avengers and other teams.

Clark is interviewing other candidates, and is expected to have at least seven assistants.

Outgoing Samohi coach Zach Cuda had only two assistants, his brother Conrad and Pat Dunn.

Athletic Director Notm Lacy wasn’t critical of that.

“Every coach does it his way,” said Lacy, “But I did tell Travis don’t try to do it alone. There’s too much work.’”
