Former Samohi Coach Brockway Leaves West LA:

Kevin Brockway, Santa Monica High’s head baseball coach for three years and assistant baseball coach at West Los Angeles College the last two, has moved to South Carolina.

West LA College hasn’t made an announcement, but sources said Brockway has taken a job as assistant baseball coach of a Division 2 college in South Carolina where his daughter has received a scholarship to play volleyball after she played last season at Santa Monica College.

The sources say West LA head coach Bob Grant is searching for a replacement.

The position will have special significance because Brockway was West LA’s primary recruiter in Santa Monica.

Five members of the 2009 Samohi baseball team have said they’ll play for West LA and all were recruited by Brockway. The group consists of outfielder Vince Lawrence, pitcher Drew Hammond, shortstop Ricky Gomez, catcher Colter Johnson and third baseman Josh Huerta.

West LA will be beginning its third season of baseball after the program was reinstated following a 21-year absence. It is attractive to local players because Santa Monica College doesn’t field a baseball team.

Including players from St. Monica and New Roads, nine former high school players from Santa Monica schools were on last season’s West LA team. The team had a 14-28 record, with the highlight being a win over conference champion Canyons.
