Former Samohi Star Ross Leaves SMC:

Christian Ross, the leading rusher on Santa Monica High’s football team last season, has left the Santa Monica College team.

“I’m going to transfer to College of the Desert and play for them next season,” said Ross. “It just didn’t work out for me at SMC.”

Ross was injured and didn’t play in the Corsairs’ first two games. He didn’t play in the next one either as SMC’s record became 0-3 with a loss to Bakersfield.

“Coach (Robert) Taylor recruited me and I looked forward to playing for him,’ said Ross.”But when he wasn’t the coach anymore it changed. There are some things around the team now that bother me.”

Taylor was dismissed as coach two weeks before the season began. He had been the coach for 15 years and called Ross “my number 1 recruit.”

Ross said he has talked to new Samohi coach Travis Clark about the move. “He supports my decision. He knows my ability,” said Ross.

After beginning his Samohi varsity career as a defensive back, Ross was switched to offense when Vince Lawrence was injured. Ross’ exceptional speed launched his career as a running back. He attracted some Division 1 attention but decided to attend a community college and boost his academic credentials.
