Thursday nights in September at Santa Monica’s Zanzibar will feature a little bit of home cooking, as the popular venue on the corner of Arizona Avenue and Fifth Street will be true to its namesake by paying tribute to the Ghanaian music scene with Afro Funke Thursdays.
Already two shows deep in a six-show set, Afro Funke is part of the Africa LIVE! series that will bring the best in Afrobeat, Brazilian, reggae, cumbia, funk, Afro-Latin house, and other “deep-rooted music from around the world” to the Zanzibar.
Hosted by Ghanaian music star Rocky Dawuni and featuring KCRW’s DJ Jeremy Sole, Afro Funke returns on Sept. 8 with Captain Planet live and a listening party for his “Cookin Gumbo” CD.
The following three shows on Sept. 15, 22, and 29 will headline DJ Fabian Alsultany, Tumi Ansah, the Afro Funke Sound System, and a Hindi Zara listening party.
Each of the shows are presented as a part of Africa LIVE!, which is a non-profit organization “whose mission is to preserve, restore, and reinvigorate the Ghanaian music scene, creating public and industry awareness for its rich history and value, and commercial opportunities for artists and the community.”
More information can be found at the respective websites of Afro Funke (www.afrofunke.com), Musaics (www.musaics.com), and Dawuni (www.RockyDawuni.com).
Unless otherwise noted by Zanzibar, doors will open each respective Thursday evening at 9 p.m., with tickets selling for $7 before 10:30 p.m. and $10 after. Pricing may differ for special events.
