The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica will build its first garden with the Positive Sprouts organic gardening program this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, a national healthy lifestyles initiative through a partnership between Amway and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan will be on-hand to break ground and work alongside Club members and volunteers as they build the garden.
Activities of the day will include club youth working alongside volunteers, garden build planting four diverse fruit and vegetable garden beds, potting station decorating take-home pots with seeds, garden-stick painting creating identification for garden fruits and vegetables, and a smoothie station learning to make delicious smoothies with fruits from the garden.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica is one of five Clubs nationwide to receive a grant from Amway to build the garden and implement accompanying curriculum that educates youngsters about nutrition, organic gardening practices, and cooking from the garden.
The Amway Positive Sprouts program mobilizes volunteers and incorporates the gardening expertise of the Green Education Foundation (GEF) to teach kids how to start and maintain their own edible gardens.
Registration starts at 8 a.m. that includes a volunteer breakfast
Lunch will be held from noon to 1 p.m.
