Santa Monica Landmarks To Turn Blue For Prostate Cancer Awareness This Month:

Several Santa Monica landmarks will turn blue during the week of Sept. 12 to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

This will include 2nd and 4th Streets in Downtown Santa Monica from Sept. 12-18 as well as the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier from Sept. 16-18.

Retailers and businesses distributing materials to customers and employees include Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. throughout September; and Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows Santa Monica from Sept. 12-18; Fred Segal Santa Monica from Sept. 12-18; and Viceroy Santa Monica from Sept. 16-18.

The disease is a major American health problem that has long been misunderstood, and too little spoken of, among men and their families.

“Prostate cancer is to men what breast cancer is to women, yet open dialogue of the disease lags behind other cancers,” says Dan Zenka, senior vice president of communication at the Los Angeles-based Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).

Ironically, Zenka was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer two years after he began working at PCF.

“We are grateful to the City of Los Angeles, Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., local property owners and Blue September for their support in this effort. It is our hope that Angelenos will see more blue every September moving forward.”

This year, more than 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer are projected to be diagnosed in the U.S. and more than 33,000 American will die as a result. Worldwide, more than 16 million men and their families are challenged by prostate cancer.

Other landmark buildings turning blue in September include:

• Capitol Records (Sept. 16-18)

• Los Angeles City Hall (Sept. 16-18)

• Prostate Cancer Foundation (Sept. 12-18)

• Pylons at LAX (the light towers) (Sept. 14-17)

• The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (Sept. 16-18)

• 5900 Wilshire, A Development of The Ratkovich Company (Sept. 16-18)

The Los Angeles City Council will also issue a proclamation in support of prostate cancer awareness during its Sept. 16 Council meeting.

The September campaign represents a partnership with PCF and Blue September, an organization designed to educate American men about prostate cancer and encourage routine screenings.
