Entries Now Being Accepted For The Sixth Annual Green Prize For Sustainable Literature:

The sixth annual Green Prize for Sustainable Literature is now accepting entries.

The Green Prize is sponsored by the Santa Monica Public Library and the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment.

It was created to encourage and commend authors, illustrators, and publishers who produce quality books that make significant contributions to, and broaden public awareness of, sustainability.

The City of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Plan defines sustainability as “meeting current needs – environmental, economic and social – without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.”

Books published in the United States in 2011 are eligible for the Prize. Authors, illustrators and publishers are encouraged to submit titles for consideration. Additionally, the public is encouraged to suggest titles for the Green Prize. Criteria include effective presentation of material, distinctive literary quality, and originality of scholarship. Youth titles to be considered should have potential for classroom use and be appropriate for students in grades K-12.

Books may be submitted by following the guidelines on the Santa Monica Public Library website at smpl.org/Green_Prize.aspx. The submission deadline is April 30, 2012. A selection committee consisting of librarians and local authorities on sustainable issues will choose the winning titles that demonstrate outstanding achievement in their respective categories. The winners will be announced later this year, preceding an awards program in September.
