As part of on-going efforts to make Santa Monica more ‘bike friendly’ a proposal was unveiled this week that would call for the construction of a one mile oval track for NASBIKE racing at the current location of City Hall.
NASBIKE, an off-shoot of the NASCAR auto racing authority, presented the city with a drawing of the proposed track and some free ‘gimme’ caps.
NASBIKE racing compares to NASCAR racing in that bicycles, instead of cars, ride around in a circle for up to six hours, and thousands of fans interpret the activity as sport and entertainment.Additionally,NASBIKE events feature snack foods that are never available in the homes of “green” bicycle enthusiasts including hot dogs, corn dogs, French fries, onion rings, and something called “Lard Bunnies.”
