Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) students are getting out their bikes, scooters, skateboards and walking shoes in preparation for Bike It! Walk It! days throughout the month of May.
Bike It! Walk It! encourages both students and staff to leave their cars at home and utilize other modes of transportation, including carpooling and riding the bus.
Roosevelt Elementary will kick off the community-wide event on May 8.
Lincoln Middle School and John Muir Elementary/Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH) will be participating on May 9.
The remaining SMMUSD schools, including Will Rogers Learning Community, Edison Language Academy, Grant Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Juan Cabrillo Elementary, Point Dume Marine Science School, John Adams Middle School, and Malibu High School, will participate on May 11.
Parking and drop-off space continue to be in short supply.
The Facility Improvements Projects office provides support for Bike It! Walk It! and Safe Routes to School in an effort to reduce traffic congestion near schools and promote health, safety, environmental, and community benefits.
The Santa Monica High School Solar Alliance initiated Bike It! Day at Samohi four years ago in an effort to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. Since then, Bike It! Walk It! has grown into a District-wide event.
The Bike It! Walk It! effort supports community engagement through this environmentally friendly program. Join SMMUSD as we bike, bus, scoot, skate, and walk to school.
