For the month of July, Santa Monica police motor officers will focus on looking for vehicles following too close to other vehicles.
California law states that the driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon, and the condition of, the roadway.
Santa Monica Police Traffic Investigator Chris Dawson reminded motorists that following too closely or “tailgating” was a serious concern.
“When a vehicle in front stops, the vehicle that is tailgating will not have time to stop,” Dawson said. “The main contributors for traffic collisions as a result of following too closely are inattention or being in a hurry.”
The Santa Monica Police Department asks that motorists allow enough extra time when preparing to go somewhere and be cognizant of the vehicle in front of you.
