On Saturday, June 30, at 11:55 a.m. an officer of the Santa Monica Police Department was on patrol in the 1700 block of Ocean Front Walk when he saw a man standing on top of a city bench with an electric razor that he had plugged into a City of Santa Monica light post.
This man was shaving the head of another man with the razor, but doing so in violation of a California Penal Code that prohibits people from stealing electricity from a lamppost.
The officer spoke with the suspect but soon noticed that he was very drunk. He also noticed that he was agitated.
The suspect then threatened to assault the officer so the officer called for backup while he continued to command the suspect.
When the backup officers arrived at the scene this man attempted to spit at them, so the officers struggled with this man and took him down to the ground.
As the officers were applying handcuffs to the man he tried unsuccessfully to kick them.
This 48-year-old homeless man was charged with assault on a police officer, theft of utility services, public intoxication, and violation of probation.
His bail was set at $20,000.
