A rare opportunity to tour the landmark home of Ray and Shelly Kappe in Rustic Canyon and meet with them personally will be hosted by the Santa Monica Conservancy this Saturday, Sept.15 from 4-6 p.m.
Ray Kappe is an internationally recognized architect, urban planner and founder of the renowned Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC), one of the top architectural schools in the nation.
His wife, Shelly Kappe, is a professor emeritus of architectural history at SCI-ARC and her extensive photo collection of world architecture will be digitized and available at the Institute.
Designed in 1965, the Kappe Residence has inspired visitors, architects and students for its innovative concepts in space planning and integration with its site.
Built on a steep hillside over a running brook, its multi-leveled spaces extend outward with dramatically cantilevered decks and glass walls, creating a tree house effect.
The program, a fundraiser for the Santa Monica Conservancy’s educational programs, includes refreshments. Cost is $150 for Conservancy members, $175 for the general public. Space is limited, RSVP by calling 310.496.3146 or visit www.smconservancy.org.
