Every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m., Brian Hamill masterfully steps into a full class at the Santa Monica Senior Recreation Center and greets his devoted older adult students ready to begin their comedy improv class. Step inside his classroom in the middle of the comedy and you will be surrounded by energized and smiling faces. Laughing often ensues and there’s never a shortage of camaraderie.
The Senior Recreation Center (SRC), located at 1450 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, has activities that appeal to many interests. Between the cooking, sing-a-long, improv comedy, board games, and tai chi classes, just to name a few, there’s a wide gamut of activities to choose from every weekday of every month.
While there’s a lot to do at the SRC these days, there are new opportunities to expand programming and offer an even greater array of classes.
In order to offer more classes, the SRC is looking for new volunteer instructors from the community to step forward in order to bring more classes to older adults of Santa Monica.
Volunteers do not need to be professional chefs in order to lead a cooking class or a full-time artist to lead an art course.
Creative and traditional class ideas are welcomed by WISE & Healthy Aging, the nonprofit social services organization in Santa Monica that administers the SRC activities.
“There is a high demand for language classes like English as a Second Language and Spanish. In order to meet growing demand for exercise classes such as Zumba Gold and chair yoga, we are looking additional enthusiastic instructors,” said Candace Shivers, coordinator at the SRC. “There are also opportunities to share your artistic side by leading an art or perhaps a knitting class, it’s up to the future instructor.”
If you or someone you know might be interested in leading a weekly or once-a-month class or a one-time only workshop, contact WISE & Healthy Aging Volunteer Services at volunteer@wiseandhealthyaging.org or call 310.394.9871 ext. 436.
