New Santa Monica City Council Members To Be Sworn In Tonight:

Santa Monica City Clerk Sarah Gorman will tonight administer the oath of office to the four Santa Monica City Council members elected Nov. 6.

The ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1685 Main Street.

Gorman will swear in Ted Winterer and Tony Vazquez as well as incumbents Gleam Davis and Terry O’Day who were elected to four years terms.

Winterer and Vazquez will assume the seats vacated by Richard Bloom (who was elected to the 50th Assembly District) and Bobby Shriver who chose not to run.

Gorman will also administer oath of office to the three Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education Members reelected (Ben Allen, Maria Leon-Vazquez, and Jose Escarce) as well as the elected Rent Control Board members (newcomer Christopher Walton and appointed incumbent Ilse Rosenstein) who were elected Nov. 6 as well.

The first order of business once the new Council members are sworn in will be the election of Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem for the next two years.

At the Nov. 6 election, Planning Commissioner Winterer came out on top with 13,586 votes (15.12 percent).

It was a sweet victory for Winterer, who missed out winning a seat in 2010 by just 56 votes.

The incumbents placed second and third: O’Day with 13,057 votes (14.53 percent) and Davis with 11,605 votes (12.91 percent).

The fourth and final spot was secured by Tony Vazquez with 9,129 votes (10.16 percent). Vazquez served on the council from 1990 to 1994.
