Santa Monica Recreation And Parks Commission Wins Statewide Award:

Santa Monica’s Recreation and Parks Commission will be honored today for being an outstanding recreation and parks commission for 2012 in California.

The California Association of Park and Recreation Commissioners and Board Members (CAPRCBM) will present the award for Outstanding Commission at the CAPRCBM Annual Installation, Awards, and Scholarship Banquet in San Jose.

The CAPRCBM is a not-for-profit organization of appointed and elected officials who serve their communities in the sphere of parks and recreation throughout California.

The Association was founded in 1968 to share information and ideas and to advance the field of recreation and parks within every commission and board throughout the state. Each year at the annual banquet exceptional projects and leaders are recognized with awards, and scholarships are given to students and young professionals aspiring to work in parks and recreation.

This is the first time the Recreation and Parks Commission for the City of Santa Monica has been honored with this statewide award.

The Commission is being recognized for their continuing work in tackling tough problems and their success in finding innovative solutions in establishing more open and green space for Santa Monica’s citizens.

In the past year, the Commission has pushed forward solutions in bike safety, bike sharing, pedestrian safety, green streets, a state-of-the-art new park, and environmentally sound concepts for development in the city.

The Commission is leading the way in finding ways to create parkland in the sixth most densely populated city in California.

Commissioner Kathi Rothner from the City of Beverly Hills noted that Santa Monica’s Commission is considered an innovative leader throughout the state for their work on universally accessible parks, bike paths, and challenging community issues.

“Santa Monica is a ‘no brainer’ – probably the most influential commission of modern times,” Rothner said.

At last year’s CAPRCBM banquet, Santa Monica’s Barbara Stinchfield received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her career as the Director of Community and Cultural Services within the city.

Phil Brock, Chair of the Recreation and Parks Commission for the City of Santa Monica, will be at the ceremony today to receive the Award for Outstanding Commission for 2012.

“On behalf of my fellow Recreation and Parks Commissioners, I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from our counterparts throughout the State of California,” Brock said. “I must add, that while our commission is receiving this award, this would not have come to pass without the hard work and dedication of our Community and Cultural Services staff. This is an award that recognizes our staff and the very involved citizens of Santa Monica.”
