Santa Monica “Kidical Mass Ride” To Be Held Saturday, April 13:

Santa Monica’s first ever “Kidical Mass Ride” will be held this Saturday, April 13, which will be a fun and comfortable bike ride experience for families and youth — coordinated by biking professionals.

The event is a collaboration between the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment, Strategic and Transportation Planning, Active Santa Monica, and Sustainable Works.

Cynthia Rose, of Santa Monica Spoke, said the day to day world of bicycling in Santa Monica is going to include more and more kids.

“This event is just one way that we can introduce Santa Monica families to a range of transportation choices and the joy of bicycling,” Rose said. “We are looking forward to participating in this fun family bike ride.”

The Kidical Mass ride seeks to build awareness and engage Santa Monica families in the Safe Routes to School Campaign to increase bike riding as a safe and sustainable alternative to driving a car.

Getting out of your car for short trips supports our Sustainable City Plan and Land Use and Circulation Element goals to promote healthy active children and a healthy environment for our community.

Organizers say they want this ride to be enjoyable for families with children and there is comfort in numbers, not just on a group ride like this but also in the day-to-day world of riding in the city.

This ride is meant to help families feel that comfort by having a group to ride with, and hopefully they will incorporate it into their daily transportation choice.

The event will have a “GREEN” theme for Earth month encouraging participants to wear all green and will incorporate fun activities for children, safety presentations, awards and prizes, and a pizza party to celebrate upon finishing the ride.

The bike route has been chosen to highlight various bicycle infrastructures in the City and bicycle leaders will be provided to facilitate the ride.

All participants are required to wear a helmet at all times during the ride and each family is responsible for their own children.

The event will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30pm; the ride will be about 45 minutes to one hour.

It will begin and end at John Adams Middle School, 2425 16th Street, Santa Monica.

RSVP by April 11 to Samantha Sommer 310.458.8716 ext. 3 or email samantha.sommer@sustainableworks.org.

Parking: Limited free parking available on site. Ride your bike or carpool!

Transit: Accessible by Big Blue Bus Lines 7 and 8.
