Vistamar School To Welcome UCLA School Of Law Dean As Graduation Speaker:

Vistamar School will welcome Commencement Speaker Rachel Moran, Dean and Michael J. Connell Distinguished Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law today, June 15.

Prior to assuming the deanship at UCLA, Rachel Moran was the Robert D. and Leslie-Kay Raven Professor of Law at UC Berkeley School of Law. Dean Moran is also one of the founding faculty members of UC Irvine Law School.

After graduating from Stanford University and earning a J.D. from Yale Law School, Rachel Moran clerked for Chief Judge Wilfred Feinberg of the U.S. Court of Appeals 2nd Circuit and worked for the San Francisco firm of Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe.

Her teaching career began at UC Berkeley and has included Stanford, NYU, University of Miami, University of Texas and Fordham Law School.

She served as director of the Chicano/Latino Policy Project at UC Berkeley’s Institute for the Study of Social Change and received the UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award.

Dean Moran is a highly active jurisprudent. 

In September 2011, she was appointed by President Obama to serve as a member of the Permanent Committee for the Oliver Wendell Holmes Devise.

She was appointed as President of the Association of American Law Schools as well the Standing Committee of the Division of Public Education of the American Bar Association.

She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Texas Hispanic Journal of Law and Policy and recently completed her service as a Senator for the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

In addition, Dean Moran chaired the Planning Committee for Taking Stock: Women of All Colors in Law Schools for the Association of American Law Schools.  

A life long champion of equality, Dean Moran’s numerous publications include: Educational Policy and the Law; Race Law Stories; Interracial Intimacy: The Regulation of Race and Romance; What Counts as Knowledge?: A Reflection on Race, Social Science, and the Law; Let Freedom Ring: Making Grutter Matter in School Desegregation Cases; and Rethinking Race, Equality and Liberty: The Unfulfilled Promise of Parents Involved.

Vistamar School is an independent college preparatory school serving grades 9-12.

The School opened its doors in 2005 with a vision for empowering students, preparing them to contribute and excel in higher education and life.

Vistamar provides a broad and balanced program that challenges and engages students; an intimate atmosphere that fosters initiative, responsibility, knowledge of self and connections to others; and a diversity of thought and culture that encourages a mature understanding of the world.

Vistamar’s 270 students come from nearly 60 zip codes in Los Angeles representing well over 50 middle schools.

The School’s robust moderated tuition program ensures access for qualified students across the socioeconomic spectrum.

The Class of 2013, which includes three Division I athletes, will be attending colleges and universities across the US and abroad, including UCLA, USC, Stanford, University of Chicago, Amherst College, University of Virginia, University of San Diego, University of Colorado, Cornell University, Boston University, University of Puget Sound, Pepperdine University, California Institute of the Arts, as well as a host of other UCs and Cal State universities.
