LifeStraws Program At Santa Monica High Saves Lives Thanks To Recyclables:

The recyclables collected by Santa Monica High School students.

As part of Santa Monica High School teacher Benjamin Kay’s long-term service learning projects, his students along with partnering families and teachers have collected and sorted approximately 100,000 recyclable beverage containers since 2008.

Since the start of this semester, Kay said more than 17,000 containers had been collected.

At five cents per container, that’s $5,000 they have donated to Water Solutions For Life (watersolutionsforlife.org) that sends water-purifying LifeStraws water purifiers to underdeveloped countries.

Here is a short video by Eco-company TV on the project: www.eco-company.tv/video/plastic-bottles-lifestraws.
