Bail Set At $20K For Aggressive Santa Monica Homeless Man:

Bail was set at $20,000 for a 58-year-old homeless man on Friday, Jan. 17 who became aggressive toward Santa Monica police officers who were investigating the report of a woman yelling in distress.

Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the alley located at the rear of the 2200 block of Broadway Avenue at 11 pm on this day in order to “check the status” of a call that had reported a woman yelling in distress.

Upon arrival the officers discovered a man and a woman inside a car.

The officers investigated and found that the woman was very drunk but that there had not been any other criminal activity.

The officers were about to leave when the man, who was sitting in the driver seat, started to yell obscenities and racial slurs at the police officers as the officers were attempting to make sense of what was happening.

The officers asked this man to be quiet, but after he did not, they arrested him.

The officers were putting this man into the back of the police vehicle when he lunged toward one of the officers and spat at him.

The man then attempted to break through the partition that separated the front seats of the vehicle from the rear seats of the police vehicle by smashing his head against it several times, as well as trying to kick open the doors.

Upon arrival at the jail this homeless man continued this kind of aggressive behavior.

He was later charged with obstructing police officers and battery upon a police officer. Bail was set at $20,000.

Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
