Santa Monica High Singers Named YoungArts Winners:

Santa Monica Singers Named YoungArts Winners: Quinn D’Andrea (left) and Jennifer Gsell.

Jennifer Gsell and Quinn D’Andrea have been named winners of the National YoungArts Foundation’s 2014 YoungArts competition in the discipline of popular voice. They are both seniors that attend Santa Monica High School and met in the high school’s choir department directed by Mr. Jeffe Hulls.

They were selected amongst 11,000 applicants through a blind adjudication process and were chosen to participate for a week of master classes and exhibitions in Miami last month.

The National Young Arts Foundation identifies and supports the next generation of young artists in the visual, literary and performing artists.

Since 1981, YoungArts has supported more than 16,000 young artists with life-changing performance and exhibition opportunities, workshops and master classes, and has awarded more than $6 million in monetary awards and facilitated in excess of $100 million in scholarships.

Additionally, YoungArts serves as the exclusive nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistically talented high school seniors.

YoungArts alumni have gone on to become leaders in their fields.

Just to name a few are: Kerry Washington, Nicki Minaj, Josh Groban, Viola Davis, Judith Hill and Vanessa Williams. Mentors include Mikhail Baryshnikov, Raul Esparza, Patty Lupone, Jacques d’Ambroise, Placido Domingo, Robert Redford as well as many others.
