Olympic High School principal Janie Gates received notification from State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, that Olympic High School has been selected as a Model Continuation High School for 2014.
“The innovative programs at your school demonstrate an enduring commitment to provide young people with the educational options and support services they need to successfully complete high school” wrote Torlakson in a letter to Principal Gates.
To be eligible for the recognition program, applicants must be accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and demonstrate exemplary program effectiveness in school management, curriculum, instructional strategies, educational climate, guidance and counseling.
According to Torlakson, “Continuation high schools increase the chances for vulnerable, at-risk students to complete their education while better preparing them for employment and self-sufficiency. Students who find traditional high schools are not meeting their individual needs or situations are often more successful with the flexible educational environment offered these campuses.”
Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District superintendent Sandra Lyon congratulated both principal Gates and her staff for all the wonderful work they do to help students succeed.
