CRJ To Host Workshop Sunday: “A Productive Summer For Your Child”:

The topic of this month’s Committee for Racial Justice workshop this Sunday, May 4 at Virginia Avenue Park in Santa Monica is more lighthearted than usual; yet a serious purpose underlies it.

The ”achievement gap” is leaving too many children of color behind academically.

Summer vacation, if spent idly, is a time when the gap may all too easily widen.

On the other hand, students might be engaged in learning about foreign languages, technology, film, animation, mixed-media printing and much more. In addition they might be working at meaningful paying jobs.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide ideas about how summer vacation can be a time of intellectual and social stimulation and growth for our children and youth.

The Sunday event will start with a potluck at 6 pm. The program will be held from from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

It will be held at Virginia Avenue Park’s Thelma Terry Building, located at 2200 Virginia Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90404.

Organizers have asked representatives from a number of summer programs to present what they have to offer. Presenters include:

• Alice Mayerling, Program Director for Santa Monica College Community Ed.

• Angela Walton, Youth Development Director at the YWCA

• Michelle Soria, Associate Program Director for the YMCA

• Michael Jackson, representative of Virginia Avenue Park

• Representatives from the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Police Activity League (PAL), Crest, and a new Peace Camp at the Church in Ocean Park

The event is sponsored by The Committee for Racial Justice, the African American Parent, Student, Staff Support Group, Virginia Avenue Park, and the Church in Ocean Park.
