Authorities are warning of a “Green Dot” scam following three recent cases reported to the Santa Monica Police Department where unsuspecting victims receive a telephone call from a person on the other end who identifies himself as a law enforcement agent.
SMPD Sgt. Rudy Camarena said the scammer told the victim that (s)/he has an outstanding warrant for a red light or traffic related violation which would lead to an immediate arrest unless paid over the telephone.
“The suspect demands that the victim obtain a Green Dot prepaid debit card in the amount of $1,500 and use the card as instrument for payment,” Camarena said. “The Santa Monica Police Department would like to remind residents that law enforcement agencies will never call asking for money to clear a warrant.”
Anyone who receives a warrant payment call or a similar suspicious call demanding urgent payment should report it immediately by calling the SMPD’s non-emergency number at 310.458.8491.
Anyone with information about the scam is also urged to contact the Police Department.
