The Los Angeles Register has ceased publication, slightly more than five months after making its debut, it was reported today.
A memo sent to paper’s employees Monday night said the closure was effective immediately, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“Pundits and local competitors who have closely followed our entry into Los Angeles will be quick to criticize our decision to launch a new newspaper and they will say we failed,” the memo written by Tony Kushner and Eric Spitz, co-owners of Freedom Communications, the paper’s owner.
“We believe, the true definition of failure is not taking bold steps toward growth.”
The memo said the company would now focus on core markets in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, where it publishes the Orange County Register and Riverside Press-Enterprise.
The Los Angeles Register published its first edition on April 16.
