The Assistance League of Santa Monica annually sponsors fifth graders from Stoner Avenue School to attend a week at Malibu Outdoor Science School, which was recently held Jan. 12-16.
Students engaged in journal writing and used scientific tools and methods while exploring different Eco-systems.
Midweek four ALSM members – Gloria Fowler, Joyce Landsverk, Sue Ferrell, and Gaye Saxon – visited the Malibu Outdoor Science School to see the students in action.
Director Greg Achenbach showed them the facilities, including student cabins, followed by a hike along a creek bed trail.
During the hike, the members got a chance to meet with some of the students who were on a short “solo walk” and others learning about different habitats.
Further along the trail, the members encountered another group of Stoner Avenue 5th graders engaged in writing in their journals about the riparian area, then using scientific tools to study insects and newts in the creek bed.
Camperships are just one of ALSM’s many philanthropic programs serving local children. For more information, visit www.SantaMonica.AssistanceLeague.org.
