A 33-year-old man charged in a series of attacks on women in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles was behind bars today on $2 million bail.
Antonio Montano of Los Angeles is charged with four felony counts of assault with intent to commit rape stemming from alleged attacks March 6, March 22 and May 17 on four women ranging in age from 23 to 41, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The women were all grabbed from behind and had their arms pinned against their bodies. The attacker ran away as they screamed for help and neighbors or friends came to their rescue.
Montano was arrested May 17 by Los Angeles police, who were called after neighbors heard a woman screaming.
He pleaded not guilty Tuesday and is due back in court June 1, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.
If convicted as charged, Montano faces up to 10 years in state prison.
