PK Wellness’ Karate For Kids Encourages Growth, Success In Santa Monica:

While PK Wellness Studio is known for its pairing of i-Lipo with a variety of intense fitness training options, a combination that has given their clients great results, it also offers programs that focus on children’s fitness and childhood development.

PK Wellness offers a Karate for Kids program that provides comprehensive Songahm Taekwondo instructions customized to build on the way children learn and develop.

This program encourages achievement, growth and success by offering awards for outstanding performances in karate class, school, at home or in tournament competition.

The objective, as owner Victor King expressed, is to instill lifelong lessons and habits that translate into success outside of the karate classroom, be it in school, at home or elsewhere.

“After the children do a couple of trainings with us, their parents will be able to see an improvement in their grades and how they act at home,” King said. “We make a point to ask how well the students are doing in school.”

The martial art skills learned at PK Wellness are also a great way to boost a child’s confidence and enhance their physical strength and fitness. American Taekwondo Association (ATA) helps to encourage personal victory with an organized belt ranking system that inspires students to always strive to achieve more.

“We have exercises that the children do when they first come to the class and there are always exercises that in the beginning there is just no way they can do,” King said. “There is a part of the brain that says ‘no you can’t do it.’ But after they do training with us you will be able to see that improvement.”

Just as with the older students, the newly designed ATA Tiger program for preschool children seeks to show the value of determination and mental strength all while having fun and getting a workout.

“The little Tigers have fun,” King said. “You can see the smiles on their faces and that’s significant. You want the children to learn that working on self-discipline and physical fitness can be fun and rewarding.”

Watching one of the Tiger programs you can see just that: smiles and fun through practicing karate.

PK Wellness also offers self-defense training, “which is especially important for women and those who work at night so that they will feel comfortable where ever they may be,” King said.

When the speed and power developed through Taekwondo is used in a self-defense situation, the results can be incredible, King said. It involves using techniques and ones own natural strength to overpower even the largest opponent.

There have been many success stories, King recounts, of the self-defense technique used in real-life situations. A former student was in Montana and she was able to prevent an attack on her with the techniques that she learned and practiced in the classes, King said.

The classes taught by PK staff and King, who has been practicing martial arts since he was four-and-a-half-years old, offer teachings that go beyond the front door of their gym.

They are values that the student can take anywhere.

PK Wellness is located at 2110 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica.
