The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be conducting a prescription drug, take-back drive, a one-day event to provide residents with a no-cost, anonymous collection site to safely dispose of unwanted and expired medications.
You can drop off your medications for disposal at the Public Safety Facility located at 333 Olympic Dr. in Santa Monica. The curbside collection drive will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 am to 2 pm.
Child poisoning or accidental ingestion are examples of potential and serious safety and health hazards posed by prescription medications; oftentimes forgotten in medicine cabinets. Pouring or flushing medications down the drain introduces harmful contaminants into our eco-system. Discarding them in the trash ensures the medications end up in landfills with the potential to leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater.
