Pass the Water Please: Advisory Stresses Healthy Options for Kids

A new campaign, “Water: The Healthiest Choice,” has been launched by ChooseHealthLA Kids. The campaign aims to increase parents’ knowledge of the health benefits of drinking water instead of sugary beverages.

Health experts recommend reducing or eliminating sugary drinks from our diet and replacing them with water, unsweetened beverages and/or lowfat or nonfat milk.

Most of us know we should be drinking more water. It’s good for our skin, digestion, and overall health. The challenging part is getting ourselves and our family, especially our kids, to drink more water throughout the day. Sometimes it is because they find plain water boring or they don’t remember to drink water until nighttime. Here are some ways to incorporate water into you and your family’s daily routine.

1Pour the kids a glass of water in the morning and with meals. Making it a morning and night routine is a great way to start drinking more water.

2Give kids a fun reusable water bottle. The more appealing the bottle is to the child the more likely they are to use it. Cups with fun straws work too!

3Add their favorite fruits to the water. Not only does the fruit give the water a twist, kids can eat the fruit at the end.

4If it is difficult for kids to completely stop drinking sugary drinks, try going “one for one.” For every sugary drink they ask for, they must have a glass of water first.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is addressing early childhood obesity by focusing on the unhealthy food and beverage advertising in our community.

“We’re working to increase community awareness of unhealthy food and beverage ads, talking with community members about food advertising, and engaging with people who can influence the type of advertisements in our community,” advocates said. “The ‘Water: The Healthiest Choice’ campaign is another way to support the work we’re doing to promote healthy eating and active living for our children.”
