Blues musician and four-time Blues Music Award winner Joe Louis Walker is playing at Harvelle’s tonight in Santa Monica. I had the opportunity to sit down with Walker, an inductee of the Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2013, and ask him a few questions.
What got you into music?
My mom and dad encouraged me at an early age.
What brings you to Santa Monica?
Performing at the club Harvelle’s here. I’m also promoting the new cd/record “Everybody wants a Piece” on the Mascot/Provogue label, I figure Santa Monica is a good place to promote.
What is your favorite thing about Santa Monica?
The beach area is one of my favorite places to visit.
Who are some of your influences?
I like all kinds of music and musicians. From Les Paul to Howlin Wolf, the Stones to John Coltrane.
What was it like being inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame and winning the 2016 Blues Foundation Artist of the Year Award?
Being inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (BHOF) by the Blues Foundation was a dream come true. It was very humbling and emotional because a lot of the folks in the BHOF aren’t with us anymore. And they didn’t get inducted until after their passing. I got the award while I’m still around. I feel lucky that I was inducted recently, thanks to everyone.
What do you think about popular music in this day and age compared to when you started as a musician?
I think the social media has changed quite a few things, as well as all the technology. I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but it’s happening regardless.
What’s something in music you strive to do, but haven’t attained yet?
I’ll get back to you on this one.
He followed the last answer with a wink and a smile.
