The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) Board of Education will hold a special meeting that is open to the public, Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. in the district office board room: 1651 16th St., Santa Monica.
The meeting will be a study session during which the Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee will present its recommendations for addressing certain financial concerns associated with a proposed reorganization of SMMUSD into two separate school districts, one in the Malibu community and one in Santa Monica. The Board members will have the opportunity to ask questions and the public to provide comments.
The recommendations are the result of a negotiation process established by the Board in December, 2015. The action item created the Committee with the Board and the Malibu City Manager to each appoint three members and set forth a series of objectives for a successful negotiation. The Committee met 38 times over 11 months prior to submitting its report today. The unanimously approved report addresses: 1) the operating budget impact of reorganization; 2) division of SMMUSD’s assets (fund balances, land and buildings and certain personal property); 3) bond-related items and other liabilities; 4) environmental liabilities; and 5) implementation of the Committee’s recommendations.
The Committee is planning community outreach meetings following the March 7 presentation and the Board will then discuss and vote on the item. More information regarding locations, dates and times of these meetings is forthcoming.
