Lincoln Middle School Field and Track Will be Open to the Public

The field and track at Lincoln Middle School are currently under renovation, with plans for reopening by January 2018. When reopened, the general public will continue to have access when school is not in session, or permitted sports are taking place.

SMMUSD is managing the Lincoln field and track construction project, which will include conversion of the existing grass field to synthetic turf with cork infill. No crumb rubber will be used for the field. Please visit this website for more information on the cork infill product: http://www.fieldturf.com/it/purefill.

The project also includes the reconstruction of the track to a
synthetic track, upgraded restroom facilities and the return of field lights. SMMUSD and the City of Santa Monica have maintained a Joint Use Agreement for recreational facilities at Lincoln Middle School, since 2003. This agreement enables the City to utilize District facilities for community programs during non-school hours including permitting the fields for organized youth sports groups.

“Our intent is to continue to provide time for use of the Lincoln field, track and basketball courts by the general public when it is not permitted for organized sports,” Superintendent Dr. Ben
Drati said. “Installation of field lighting will provide additional opportunities for permit groups and the general public to use this much needed open space during non-school hours.”

City and District staff are working together to ensure that the agreements for John Adams Middle School and Lincoln Middle School reflect this intent.
The project was planned as part of Measure BB campus upgrades and is funded through Measure ES. We appreciate your ongoing support of our school bonds that are being used to improve and upgrade our facilities throughout our District.

Parents, staff and community members may contact Carey Upton, Chief Operations Officer, cupton@smmusd.org for more information.
