Conscious Human Medicine Helping Santa Monica Residents Reverse Chronic Disease and Boost Health

By Staff Writer

When co-founders Dr. Mahboubeh Hashemi and Dr. Matthew Cavaiola started their practice, Conscious Human Medicine, they had the goal of bringing the power of naturopathic medicine to help the residents of Santa Monica prevent and reverse chronic disease and enhance human performance.

For people seeking a longer, healthier life and solutions for their health concerns, besides medications, the answer might not always be crystal clear. Yet, naturopathic medicine offers people the opportunity to get to the bottom of their health problems without the harmful side effects that medications often cause. Naturopathic medicine treats each person as an individual and is patient-centered unlike the conventional “one size fits all” model that is diagnosis-centered. Dr. Cavaiola stated “Patient-centered care means your doctor works with you as a team. They actually take the time to listen to you and fully address your problems.”

Conscious Human Medicine is a rare hidden gem in the heart of downtown Santa Monica providing state of the art, integrative naturopathic care and using innovative technologies such as IV Drip Therapy and Vitamin Shots, Biofeedback, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, Prolothearpy, Platelet-rich Plasma Therapy (PRP), Craniosacral Therapy and Biopuncture. “We are one of the only clinics in the area that offers such a diverse, truly holistic and team approach to patient care,” Dr. Hashemi said.

Conscious Human Medicine places a heavy emphasis on longevity medicine. Dr. Hashemi stated, “For us, longevity medicine has 2 pillars: healthspan and lifespan. The conversation around longevity is incomplete unless we prioritize both healthspan (quality of life) and lifespan (extent of life). Efforts to extend life without a focus on improving quality of life can translate into prolonged suffering.”

Dr. Hashemi and Dr. Cavaiola see patients everyday who have been struggling with chronic illnesses, sometimes for years or decades without any improvement. “Chronic diseases, like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune conditions, and pain, can rob you of the life you want to live and are the most common causes of premature mortality. And, the good news, the important news is that many of these conditions are completely preventable,” Dr. Cavaiola said.

At Conscious Human Medicine, one of the foundations to help prevent and treat chronic disease is by using lifestyle factors, including nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep and relationships that when stacked together can have a powerful and profound effect on health. Dr. Cavaiola stated, “Chronic disease does not happen overnight – it is usually years in the making. We are firm believers that no matter where along the health spectrum you are, you always have the capacity to return to a state of health.”

When patients come see the doctors at Conscious Human Medicine for the first time, they can expect to spend over an hour, where the doctors listen to their health concerns and investigate many other facets of their health. This discovery process alongside comprehensive lab testing is an important part of getting to the root cause(s) of their health problem. At subsequent visits, Dr. Hashemi and Dr. Cavaiola begin to educate their patients about the underlying reasons behind their health issues, implement a customized treatment plan and answer any questions they may have.

When asked about what she would like residents of Santa Monica to take away from this article, Dr. Hashemi said, “Your body is resilient and has an amazing ability to heal itself – you just need to provide it with the optimal environment to do so. Team up with a doctor who is serious about getting to the root cause(s) of your health concerns, has a true holistic approach and provides you with an individualized treatment plan. The one size fits all model of medicine does not work. Lastly, be proactive about your health — your well-being is the most precious commodity you have.”
