Krispy Kreme Closes Santa Monica Location Amid Stiff Competition

Building at corner of Wilshire and Euclid for lease

By Kerry Slater

Krispy Kreme has closed its Santa Monica location amid stiff competition in the area’s doughnut scene.

After over a decade in business, the Krispy Kreme at 1231 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica has permanently closed. The corner storefront now displays a For Lease sign.

The company did not respond to a request for comment regarding the reason for the closure, but the move comes as Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica has become saturated with doughnuts over the past few years.

In 2014 Dunkin’ Donuts opened a block away at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and 12th Street. A year later Sidecar Doughnuts opened a location on Wilshire Boulevard near 7th Street. Now in 2021 Randy’s Donuts is set to open at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and 9th Street in the former The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf space.

With the Krispy Kreme closure, the doughnut chain will have no locations on the Westside. Other locations include in the Crenshaw-area and near Gardena. The company did not respond to whether another Santa Monica or Westside location is in the works.
