Emergency Freeway Closures in Santa Monica to Address Bluff Instability

City Takes Measures to Conduct Critical Repairs on I-10 and PCH Routes

In a proactive move to address land instability concerns on a section of the Santa Monica Bluffs, the City of Santa Monica, in collaboration with local and regional partners, has announced temporary closures of portions of the westbound I-10 freeway, northbound Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), and the northbound Moomat Ahiko Way on-ramp.

To undertake the essential emergency work and ensure public safety, crews will employ a large crane with a clamshell attachment to carefully remove the top portion of the unstable bluff and systematically break it apart for transport to an off-site location.

The closure schedule is as follows: The northbound Moomat Ahiko Way on-ramp to PCH will be closed from 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Subsequently, the westbound I-10 from Lincoln Boulevard through the northbound Pacific Coast Highway to the California Incline will be closed starting at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

All affected routes are expected to reopen promptly by 12 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

While these closures are in effect, the Lincoln Boulevard offramp to eastbound I-10 will remain accessible, along with the California Incline, the southbound PCH, and the eastbound I-10. For those traveling on the I-10 Freeway seeking access to Pacific Coast Highway, a designated detour route will be in place, guiding drivers through the following streets:

  1. Wilshire Blvd./Santa Monica Blvd.
  2. Ocean Avenue
  3. California Incline

A detailed schedule of the closures can be found on the City’s website, and a downloadable PDF version of the detour map is also available for reference.
