Safe Streets Project Recognized for Enhancing Safety and Accessibility on 17th Street and Michigan Avenue
The Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) has awarded its B.E.S.T. Project of the Year award in the transportation category to Santa Monica’s Safe Streets for 17th Street and Michigan Avenue project.
The APWA awards recognize projects that enhance public infrastructure and safety in categories including transportation, building, and stormwater management, among others.
The Safe Streets initiative was developed to address increased pedestrian and bicycle activity on 17th Street following the opening of the Metro E (Expo) Line in 2016. Improvements along 17th Street between Wilshire and Pico boulevards include a protected bikeway, pedestrian-scale lighting, curb extensions, upgraded ADA-compliant ramps, and enhanced crosswalks. Michigan Avenue received new curb extensions, improved ramps, and mini traffic circles to facilitate safer, more efficient travel for all users.
“Santa Monica has been working hard to improve safety on 17th Street and Michigan Avenue for all community members, and it’s an honor to have this project recognized by APWA,” said Rick Valte, Santa Monica’s Director of Public Works. “The Safe Streets project is just one of many ways the city is working to promote a safer and more accessible urban environment for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists alike.”
The Safe Streets project previously received the 2024 Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Award from the League of California Cities and was named one of the best new bike lanes in the United States in 2023.
