Heavy Rain, Mudflows, and Safety Concerns Force Closures At All Schools
All Malibu schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, due to hazardous road conditions and accessibility challenges caused by ongoing rain and mudflow issues, school district officials announced Sunday.
The closures will affect Webster Elementary, Malibu Elementary, Malibu Middle School, and Malibu High School. “We are as disappointed as you are in this outcome following our discussions with local partners today,” district officials said in a statement.
The decision to close the schools was made after consultation with the City of Malibu, the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsay Horvath’s office, and the Los Angeles County Public Works Department. Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton andIsaac Burgess, Executive Director, Malibu Pathway & Secondary Schools cited safety concerns for students and staff as their top priority.
Parents and staff will receive additional updates from school principals regarding plans to maintain learning continuity during the closure.
“We continue to monitor the situation and will communicate with you again on Monday regarding plans for Tuesday,” officials added.
