Set in 1920s Chicago, the musical follows Roxie Hart, an aspiring performer who lands in jail after killing her lover
Santa Monica High School’s performing arts students will take the stage in Chicago, the popular jazz-era musical, with a two-weekend run at Barnum Hall beginning Feb. 28.
The production features alternating casts and a full pit orchestra, with six performances scheduled through March 9. Directed by Jeffery Huls, with choreography by Sydney Diamond and musical direction by Terry Sakow, the show includes more than 160 students in acting, dance, music, and technical roles.
Set in 1920s Chicago, the musical follows Roxie Hart, an aspiring performer who lands in jail after killing her lover. She navigates the corrupt legal system alongside fellow inmate Velma Kelly, a vaudeville star, as both women compete for media attention and legal salvation.
Huls said students had long hoped to perform Chicago and described the production as an immersive experience that transports audiences to a clandestine jazz club of the era.
Performances will take place on Feb. 28 and March 1 at 7 p.m., March 2 at 5 p.m., March 7 and 8 at 7 p.m., and March 9 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10.50 for students and seniors and $20.50 for adults. Additional details and reserved seating are available at samohitheatre.org.
