The free rides come as Santa Monica continues its transition to a zero-emission bus fleet.
Big Blue Bus will offer free rides across its system on Wednesday, April 22, in observance of Earth Day.
The promotion is intended to encourage riders to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing public transportation instead of driving. Officials said taking the bus can help lower greenhouse gas emissions while also saving riders money on gas and parking.
This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” focuses on promoting renewable energy and tripling global clean energy production by 2030. Big Blue Bus described using public transit as a practical way for individuals to contribute to those goals.
The free rides come as Santa Monica continues its transition to a zero-emission bus fleet. Last month, city officials held a groundbreaking for new electric bus charging infrastructure at Big Blue Bus headquarters to support the expansion of electric vehicles in the fleet.
No registration or special ticket is required for the free rides.
