A block-party-style event will take place at 2520 Second Street where attendees can enjoy live music, birthday cake and storytelling about the house’s history
The Santa Monica Conservancy will mark the 10th anniversary of the Shotgun House’s transformation into the Preservation Resource Center with a free community celebration on Sunday, May 17.
The block-party-style event will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 2520 Second Street. Attendees can enjoy live music, birthday cake, storytelling about the house’s history, and recognition of individuals involved in its preservation. A $100 donation option allows supporters to sign a special birthday card for the landmark.
The Shotgun House, built between 1893 and 1902 in the Ocean Park neighborhood, is a rare surviving example of a modest architectural style once common as vacation cottages and worker housing. Originally located at 2712 Second Street, the board-and-batten structure was moved three times and faced demolition before community efforts and the City of Santa Monica intervened. It was rehabilitated and reopened in 2016 as the Preservation Resource Center, which provides information on historic preservation, offers docent-led tours, and serves as an education hub.
