Brazilian solo artists launch cultural intervention at Santa Monica’s Highways Performance Space

Five performers debut “Made in Brasil,” a two-night festival exploring immigrant identity and the theatrical hybridity.

Brazilian performers will launch a two-night residency at Highways Performance Space this weekend to address the historical underrepresentation of their community in the Los Angeles creative industry.

The festival, titled “Made in Brasil – Solo Works,” runs on May 9 and features five independent artists exploring themes of immigrant identity and cultural memory. Produced by Leopold Nunan and directed by Bia Oliveira, the event is designed as a statement of artistic presence for the Brazilian diaspora in Southern California.

“Brazilian artists in Los Angeles have long been producing powerful work without a unified platform,” Nunan stated. “This festival is about awareness.”

Hosted by Andrea Ferraz, the curated lineup utilizes “theatrical hybridity,” blending traditional staging with digital and multimedia elements. The program includes:

  • Minotaur.exe: Leopold Nunan’s “techno-myth” that explores ritual within a digital landscape.
  • Clarice and the Chicos: Bruna Fachetti’s poetic tribute to the works of Clarice Lispector and Chico Buarque.
  • 158 Steps: Renato Fimene’s multimedia investigation into the mechanics of migration.
  • Marilyn Times: A cross-cultural reimagining of the Marilyn Monroe archetype performed by Bia Borin.

Performances begin at 8:30 p.m. at 1651 18th St. in Santa Monica. Tickets are available for $25 and can be purchased here.
