The Santa Monica College Music Department will present fully staged productions of two 19th-century comic operas later this month at The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage.
The productions, performed by the college’s Opera Theatre and Symphony Orchestra, will feature La cambiale di matrimonio and Trial by Jury. Performances are scheduled for May 22-24 at the SMC Performing Arts Center in Santa Monica.
Rossini’s “La cambiale di matrimonio,” translated as “The Marriage Contract,” follows the story of an arranged marriage that is disrupted and reconfigured. The opera will be performed in Italian with English supertitles.
“Trial by Jury,” originally written by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, has been adapted into a parody of a 1980s divorce court, according to organizers.
The productions are directed by Janelle DeStefano, with Mercedes Juan Musotto serving as conductor. Costumes are designed by Marianne Parker.
DeStefano said the pairing of the two short operas creates a program centered on comedy and accessible storytelling while highlighting early works from major composers.
Performances are scheduled for May 22 at 7:30 p.m., May 23 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and May 24 at 3 p.m.
Tickets range from $10 for students and staff to $25 for general admission, according to the college.
