A petition last year urged officials to repair Warren Avenue and nearby Moore Street while saving the trees, citing their environmental and community benefits.
Work is continuing on a roadway repair and tree removal project on Warren Avenue in Mar Vista to address long-standing safety concerns caused by tree roots damaging pavement and sidewalks.
Councilmember Traci Park’s office said in a statement that while construction can be disruptive, the improvements are necessary to repair infrastructure and ensure the roadway serves the community safely for years to come.
The project has been a point of contention in the neighborhood. In March 2025, Mar Vista homeowners told NBC4 Los Angeles that growing tree roots had created hazardous bumps, making the street difficult and dangerous for drivers, cyclists, children and elderly residents. Some installed cones to warn unfamiliar drivers.
Residents said they wanted the road fixed but preferred solutions that preserved the mature trees, such as root trimming, rather than removal. A petition last year urged officials to repair Warren Avenue and nearby Moore Street while saving the trees, citing their environmental and community benefits.
City officials have cited safety risks from root damage as the reason for the removals. It is unclear how many trees are being removed as part of the current work.
