Venice Copes with No Home Games:

Venice High doesn’t have any home basketball games this season because the gym is being refurbished.

The team practices primarily at nearby Mark Twain Middle School.

“We’re rolling with it,” said coach Dave Galley. “The administration has been supportive.”

Galley is in his first season. He arrived from the Elizabeth Learning Center, where he had coached the last six years, to replace Josh Herscher.

Venice has only one returning player, football star Jonathan McNeal, and is without Frank Murray, who played last season but then turned his attention to football.

The Gondoliers have a 4-11 record but have been superior a few times. They defeated Pioneer High of Whittier. 62-42, and Roosevelt, 50-38.

Guard Chad Toniolta is their leader in scoring and assists.

In Western League games Venice is 0-3. It was routed by powerful Westchester and Palisades and edged by University, 68-65.

Galley believes the players are learning well and keeping a positive attitude. Next season they’ll even have home games.
