For the past 40 years PS1 has hosted “Dishversity Day” on its Santa Monica campus.
On March 29, the event returned that encouraged every family in the school, which represents a diverse population, to bring in a recipe that reflects their families heritage. And then everyone took part in a feast together — family style. Ergo, “Dishversity.”
But this year Dishversity Day wasn’t all about the food.
The Abalaye Drum Ensemble performed rhythmic tunes that transported all attendees to their happy places.
The 5th and 6th grade class brought the house down when they joined the Abalaye Drum Ensemble with the drums they had constructed using recycled materials.
It’s a fitting tradition for PS1 because it recognizes that every child is unique and the day is a way to honor that.
