“The Day The Earth Stood Still” Kicks Off Free Series Sept. 27:

Santa Monica College will launch a Friday night Global Citizenship Film Series Sept. 27 that will include audience discussions following the screenings.

The series will feature four films that focus on some aspect of this year’s global citizenship theme, “Peace and Security: Managing Conflict and Violence in a Turbulent World.”

All screenings are free and are held at 6:30 p.m. in Room 165 of the SMC Humanities & Social Science building, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Seating is on a first-arrival basis.

Political Science Professor Alan Buckley, Film Studies Professor Josh Kanin, and Earth Science Professor Pete Morris host and moderate the after-screening discussions.

The lineup of films is:

Sept. 27 – The Day the Earth Stood Still, Robert Wise’s 1951 classic science fiction film about how fear blinds the world to the offerings of peace and security from a space alien; starring Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal.

Oct. 18 – Gabriel Over the White House, Gregory La Cava’s 1933 satire about how the President of the United States achieves domestic security and world peace by tossing the Constitution and establishing a dictatorship; starring Walter Huston and Franchot Tone.

Nov. 8 – Coming Home, Hal Ashby’s 1978 controversial film about measuring the cost of peace and security by the shattered lives of veterans and their families; starring Jane Fonda and Jon Voight in Oscar-winning roles.

Dec. 6 – Storm, Hans-Christian Schmid’s 2009 drama about efforts of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia to help promote peace and security by prosecuting Bosnian-Serb war criminals; starring Kerry Fox and Anamaria Marinca.
