The Santa Monica City Council approved Tuesday three consent calendar items resulting in more than $750,000 in expenditures for flooring, sanitation, and a water main replacement.
Council members unanimously approved $264,820 to be allocated to California-based Cannon Corp. as part of a professional services agreement governing the Annual Water Main Replacement/Upgrade Project.
According to City staff, the Annual Water Main Replacement/Upgrade Project will “replace and construct approximately 9,000 feet of water distribution pipelines at various locations to ensure an adequate and reliable supply of water to customers.”
City staff added the water main replacement and upgrade is based upon a long-term plan to bring up to date the City’s water mains.
Cannon Corp. would be providing engineering design services, developing construction documents, and providing engineering support during construction phase of the project.
The following locations are where about 9,000 linear feet of water main would be replaced or upgraded:
• Olympic Boulevard from Twelfth Court to Lincoln Boulevard
• Lincoln Court from Olympic Boulevard to Colorado Avenue
• Olympic Boulevard (north side) from 17th Street to 19th Street
• Olympic Boulevard (south side) from 17th Street to 21st Street
• 18th Court from Olympic Boulevard to I-10 Freeway
• Pennsylvania Avenue from 21st Street to 22nd Street
• Euclid Court from California Avenue to Wilshire Boulevard
• 16th Court from Broadway to Santa Monica Boulevard
• 20th Court from Wilshire Boulevard to Arizona Avenue
• Ocean Avenue from California Avenue to Wilshire Boulevard
• New Waterline at Olympic Boulevard from 26th Street to Stewart Street
In all, the City maintains and operates a 250-mile network of water distribution mains. According to City staff, pipelines range in size from six to 36 inches. More than 86,000 residential and business customers are serviced by the City’s water main network, with an estimated 12 million gallons per day flowing through the pipelines.
City Hall anticipates the design phase of the water main replacement/upgrade project to be complete within six to eight months, while construction would start in Fall 2014. Construction should take up to eight months.
Also approved by council members was an expenditure to replace carpet and flooring in City facilities.
During this Fiscal Year, carpet and flooring is scheduled to be replaced at 1450 Ocean, City Hall, Fairview Library, Main Library, Joslyn Park Auditorium, the Public Safety Facility, and the Santa Monica Pier Carousel Building.
Earlier this year, City Hall had entered a three-year deal for $750,000 with HM Carpet and Elite Floorcovering. The council’s action this week adds $200,000 to the contract.
Finally, the council authorized a three-year, $300,000 contract with Waxie Sanitary Supply to purchase dual compactors in an attempt to cut down on trash collection time.
In the 2012-13 Fiscal Year, City Hall deployed 13 dual compactors to replace concrete compactors.
In all, these three expenditure approvals total $764,820; all three items were approved as part of the consent calendar.
